List of Sylheti Books

Explore Sylheti Literature in Syloti Nagri Script

Here we present a list of Sylheti books available for purchase online, in bookshops and in libraries. In Sylhet, Bangladesh, these works can be found at the Muslim Shahitto Shongshod library. In the UK and Ireland, they are held in major collections such as the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, the Cambridge University Library, the National Library of Scotland, the National Library of Wales and Trinity College Dublin. If they are not available in your local library, you can request a copy through the inter-library service. We hope these books will help you learn and practise Sylheti and, most importantly, enjoy reading. The list includes children’s titles and activity books as well. Authors who have published works written in Sylheti using the Syloti Nagri script and wish to promote them are welcome to send us book details, cover images, purchase links or library references, and preferably a copy for our review. We have also reviewed many Sylheti books, including those that only claim to be Sylheti, with videos available on our YouTube channel, Facebook page and TikTok to give learners further guidance and insight into the literature.

We appeal to all readers, book buyers, booksellers and publishers to be vigilant. Some books are produced that mislabel Sylheti as Bengali or Assamese, and sometimes the reverse, whether for propaganda, for commercial gain, by mistake or with the intention  to confuse. Publishing and supporting such material damages the recognition campaign and contributes to the erasure of our language. UNESCO and other international organisations warn that misrepresentation is one of the leading causes of language death. Please do not buy, sell, promote or publish books that undermine Sylheti by presenting it as a dialect or accent of another language. Such labels stigmatise Sylheti speakers, especially children, who are often taught that their mother tongue is invalid, impure or unintelligent. Instead, help protect our language and identity. Report misleading publications, avoid supporting them, and join us in raising awareness. To safeguard the future of Sylheti, add your name to our petition  and say clearly: Stop calling Sylheti Bangla.
