Let’s Learn Sylheti

Let’s Learn Sylheti

Sylheti is an independent language with its own grammar, sound system and rich cultural history. Its script, Syloti Nagri, was developed specifically for Sylheti and has been in use since at least the fifteenth century. By comparison, the standardised Bengali script, also called Eastern Nagri, was shaped much later by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in 1855, while the first Bengali grammar was written in 1743 by the Portuguese missionary Manuel da Assumpção. Eastern Nagri is also used for Assamese, but Syloti Nagri was created for Sylheti alone. This page presents resources, videos and guides for learning Sylheti, including spoken lessons, writing tutorials and recommended books for children of Sylheti heritage, bilingual speakers, beginners and visitors interested in Sylheti culture.
