Privacy and Confidentiality Statement

Sylheti Language (SL) is committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all individuals who engage with our websites, petitions, campaigns, and communication channels.

We may collect personal information such as your name, email address, contact details, and any other information you choose to provide through forms, petitions, or group requests (including WhatsApp, Facebook and similar platforms). This data is collected for the purposes of:

  • Verifying your details, including Know Your Customer (KYC) checks where appropriate
  •  Communicating with supporters, volunteers, and members
  • Managing petitions and presenting them to appropriate representatives,  elected officials, government bodies, or other relevant organisations
  • Providing information, updates, and campaign materials where you have given consent
  •  Administrative purposes, including maintaining secure supporter and membership records

We will never sell, trade, or misuse your personal data. Information will only be shared where strictly necessary to fulfil the purpose for which it was provided, such as delivering petitions or contacting elected representatives. In such cases, we request and expect all petition recipients and partners to respect the privacy and confidentiality of your data and to act in line with good practice.

Due to the international nature of our campaign, we cannot guarantee compliance with a single national data protection authority. However, we strive to follow principles consistent with UK and Bangladesh data protection standards, as well as generally accepted international privacy norms. Our volunteers and activists may be based in different countries, but all are instructed to uphold our guidelines on confidentiality and respect for personal information.

Supporter details are shared only with individuals or organisations directly associated with our campaign, and only for the intended purpose of advancing

recognition of the Sylheti language, script, heritage and identity. We will not share your details with any unrelated third party and will never sell your information.

You have the right to withdraw your consent or request removal of your personal data at any time. To do so, please contact us at:

Participation in our WhatsApp groups, Facebook groups, or similar forums requires agreement to respect privacy, confidentiality, and group rules. This includes not contacting members individually without consent, not sharing group content outside the group without administrator approval, and never posting offensive, irrelevant, or unlawful material. Members must not approach or contact other members in person without first seeking consent within the group. Attempting to add people to a separate group without written permission from SL, regardless of intention, will be treated as a breach of trust and may result in permanent exclusion from SL activities.

If you have been added to any of our groups in solidarity but believe you should not remain, you may remove yourself at any time.

By submitting your information to us, you consent to its use in line with this Privacy and Confidentiality Statement and in support of the objectives of the Sylheti Language campaign.
